Default Increase in greedy players?

Anyone else noticed an increase in greedy players? I was in LA about 15 minutes ago (I think district 3) and I was giving things away to the player that needed them the most. So I would ask people to come to the fountain and show me the crappy weapon they use. Then I would Either give them a replacement weapon or an upgrade for the weapon they have. Some people I said "you have a nicer (whatever) than I am giving away"...these people GOT MAD...they started to whisper me with insults about how I was a liar and a scammer. Next case.. I was giving away free shadow bows to rangers and rangers only(because they can use them)...and I had warriors coming up to me and asking me for the bows...what's a WaMo gonna do with a shadow bow other than jack the price and gorge the hell out of the rangers that need them?

All in all I gave away 5 shadow bows(blue and white max and 1 point off, an icy sword hilt, a fiery dragon sword(purple max dmg +11>50), a max armor shield of the wing(gold), a +28 Fortitude Grip Axe, A Hale Earth Staff (purple +10 energy +14 HP) and +21 Fortitude Grip Bow......I think maybe 2 people said thank you...and they were the two girls that got something. What's with all the greed? Money isn't that important and it doesn't hurt to say thank you once in a while.

My Warrior uses bows for pulling, but yeah, damage isn't important in that case. Anyhow, there are always greedy people around; what changes is how much you notice them.

There are always greedy people in guildwars. you just tend to see more of them when you try to give items away for free.. which i gave up on several weeks ago lol

Whenever I used to try to clear inventory by giving away items for free by being nice, or items I got sick of trying to sell for 500g, I'd get all sort of suspicious whispers (eg. "what's wrong with it??"), complaints that the item is crap (because it's not max dmg, or the req is too high for them, etc, etc), that I must be hiding a better item from them, why won't I give them more than one free item, etc, etc.

yah, i just got so sick of the greedy bastards that it's easier to sell to the merch or salvage the items

I love giving away items, its just people tend to be greedy when they want to be. They'll probably ask for more then what they're asking for. Lets say, I'm helping out a person who is new with the game. Ok, lets say I give him/her a max bow with a low requirement. Another person comes by and asks me.. "Why does that person get that kind of item and I don't? Since they got that, can I have 1k, 20 iron, 8 steel and oh, why don't you stick in a couple of runes too" Gosh, they sometimes don't understand that, this is comming from a generious player who is giving you free items that they can have and use in the later future.

They don't appreciate the hardish work you put in to get those max dmg crummyish stuff you give away. They expect you to be "Santa Clause" and give them a lot more weapons/items/gold so they don't have to go farm for it themselves =/

The general problem with chairity it do decide who to give it to and who not to, however its only your choice.
Noone can ever be sure if any chairity reaches its determined destination, most times it only reaches it incomplete, but it always helped someone somehow on its way there.

Yeah, I've said this a few times in previous posts. GW sadly reflects life, in that people (with some exceptions) are generally greedy, rude & ungrateful.

I have stopped giving away gold & purple weapons to people unless I know them, or have spent a little time in a PuG with them - as I know damn well most will immediately rush out and sell it for a huge profit. Otherwise I'll just salvage it - but it's such a waste. I do still give away crafting items that people are looking for, but even then I often get "free? is there something wrong with you?".

With a bit of luck we may get our long-awaited auctions - hopefully I can then sell my drops for a fair price - and maybe even get that gold/purple/blue that I have never been able to afford.

Yeah, same here... i stopped giving away free items a while ago after getting insulted to death from a person and his whole guild for not giving him a (crappy) gold max damage sword. That was so much fun having my chat blocked for several minutes with insults flying in.
I couldn't just ignore all of them (damn 10 user limit -.-) so i had to endure the rest. And they kept on going for quite some time. Thats when i stopped giving away stuff for free except when it comes to friends (from RL).

I sure you realise that amongst those people that showed you the weapon they used would have been a few that placed a much poorer weapon in order to get a free weapon. Also just because a wa/mo wants a bow doesn't mean he hasn't got a Ranger character that needs it. I always get items for my other chars if I happen to see them being sold. I am very greedy, I want lots of money and lots of items, but I do say thankyou and pay for items, I rarely snare free items just to sell them.

If you're looking for gratitude, you're not going to find it giving away free things to random people on the internet.

If you're genuinely looking to help new players out, you shouldn't care if they show you gratitude or not.

People being jerks about it totally suck, though.

You can genuinely want to help new players and want some damn gratitude for it.

I give my sigils away to newb guilds, the least they can do is say thanks.

I just don't see the point in helping strangers out with expectations and stipulations attached. All you're going to end up doing is being disappointed.

You come across sounding like a very negative person you know. I've given people free stuff, but only if they are polite and friendly. Not demanding.

I believe in "help me, help you" way of thinking.

Obviously it's hard to be able to spot new players who will be not only put your item to good use but also be grateful for it in the massive crowds of Lion's Arch. There's nothing that will help that.

That's why if you can't go into towns with the intent to give away gear that's a step above vendor trash (IE: Barely sellable to other players in trade) without it bothering you when someone is ingrateful, then maybe you need to rethink your priorities about helping out random strangers. That is all I am saying.

Seriously, either look for low level players and whisper them the offer, or sell cheaply instead. Broadcasting that you're giving stuff away for free is a recipe for attracting every asshat with a personality disorder on the map.

Also, if I was you I wouldn't do it in district 1 of Ascalon or Lions Arch. The vendors gather there. Do it in other towns or other districts, especially the ones off the rush-track, like Sardelac Sanatorium, Maguuma Stade, Fishermans Harbor, or the ice cave.

EDIT: Just wanted to add that I agree with Sanji in what he says.

I like to sometimes give away things to newbies for free or for a symbolic price of what merchant would pay me for the item (some people feel better if they have "earned" it ^^), but I usually pick the people that I see are newbies from the way they advertise or talk ... for example if I see a newbie ranger advertising to buy a bow, or someone desperately trying to sell a green dye I have only run into nice people that way ... I wasn't looking for gratitude (maybe just wanting to pat myself on the back, hehe), but someone once told me I was the niciest person that he had met in GW so far. That was kinda sweet :P.

I think advertising that you're giving something away is bound to attract the wrong people. Nice players often are shy and won't run up to you demanding items ...

I'll give away items to Guildmates. Er...some Guildmates. Even they can be total jerkwads. My Guild Leader has gone out of his way to first get me to join then give me items to enhance my Monk. So he is always first on my list for free items. I gave him a real decent bow not to long ago that I believe I could have got a fair chunk of change for. I had to tell him NO when he knew I got some more black dye. I am saving that for my 15K armor.

I also will give stuff away to people I meet in a PUG. The nice people I meet in a PUG. These are people that ask to add me to their list. Thank me for heals and so forth. I only ask them if they come across some item I might need down the road save it for me. Most do. In fact I still have some nice stuff that I have my Warrior hang on too. He has become my Storage Dood. I do have a max gold hammer with some nice stats that I am sure is worth some dough. I will probably give that away to some one that needs it for PvP or GvG battles. I can't stand selling things. People are too rude and it is time consuming. When I get some nice stuff when I am in a PUG I will ask after the mission if anyone NEEDS it. If they don't I will just sell it back to the game just to clean out my inventory. I am sure I have sold stuff back that someone could have used.

But that is the nature of the beast I suppose.

i have given some stuff away but only when i was trying to sell it and a noob tries to buy a max damage bow for 200 gold, so i decide to just give it to him. Most of the time i just salvage what i find because its not worth the time and effort doing it any other way.

i really don't understand it because: in real life the number of people that do this is significantly less. i think that the fact that their identity is hidden and that it is very unlikely they will come across the people again adds to their confidence. change to another char and they can't recognise you. people don't like to feel indebted to someone else (quite why i don't know) and so if they can make themselves believe that they deserved what they got and that it was not charity. the FoW armor wearing people who always appear to a giveaway are simply oppertunists and will continue to be so no matter how much money they have. or maybe they go to get items for a guild mate.... maybe........

it is, i think, human nature to not necessarily thank people who do things for you. we are a race that lives in a multi-dependant community. people routinely do things for us and we likewise for others. our racial mentality is what goes around comes around

When I give away items, I either whisper that person right out and ask them if they want it or publicly anounce it and sometimes put some certain "criteria(s)" for ppl to follow in order to get the item.
Ex.
"you must be under lvl 10..." or "must be a war, mes, monk, etc."

*You would not believe some ppl ingame, they just read the words "FREE" or "GIVING AWAY" and ignore the rest of the sentence. lol
And ofcourse, they get pissed at the fact that they cant get it.
/ignore list is a great thing.

*The ppl who I do give stuff to, do thank me 99% of the time.
but I certainly would not get hopped up, if they didnt say a word after.
I would generally know if that person is worth giving the item to, by the 1st response they give me when I whisper them. *if it's a "cursing" response = move to another person.. *if it's along the lines of "yes/yup/wow thx" = bingo we have a winner. hehe

*basically ignore the weirdos and keep helping the ppl.

-cheers.

*also, with these types of games, understandably, it is a given that it does generate greedy players.
